Because wood is a very durable material wooden loft ladders will last a long time and stand up well to frequent use.  Their more traditional appearance can also help them fit in with their surroundings more than a metal ladder.

Other factors to consider

Wooden loft ladders are heavier than their aluminium counterparts and can therefore be more cumbersome in operation.  

Wooden ladders also tend to be more expensive than an equivalent aluminium ladder, and are more prone to problems caused by temperature and humidity.
